Research interests

  • Distributed Robotics
  • Recently, I've been working on several issues in distributed robotics. I am interested in cooperation and coordination in distributed multi-robot sytems, such as robotic swarms. I also study the influence of communication between the robots on their performance (in terms of task execution). I do this research in SWARM Robotics @ IDSIA group, leaded by Luca Gambardella and Gianni Di Caro.

  • Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
  • I am particularly interested in methods inspired by biology, such as SWARM Intelligence and Reinforcement Learning. I also have some experience with other machine learning methods (both supervised and unsupervised), in particular in applications like business intelligence and data analysis.

  • Adaptive systems and adaptive control
  • One of my research goals is to design systems that have the ability to adapt to their environment. My PhD dissertation may be a prominent example - I designed AntHocGeo, an ant routing algorithm for ad-hoc networks. AntHocGeo implements innovative knowledge representation and management schemes in order to improve the adaptation capabilities of artificial ants in the dynamically changing environment.

  • Biometrics
  • I am also interested in developing and implementing biometric methods. I was working on on-line signature verification and identification methodologies based on the Dynamic Time Warping technique.
