20 April 2021
Jürgen Schmidhuber, Scientific director of the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IDSIA USI-SUPSI), was interviewed by Forbes in a report focused on Artificial Intelligence and its current applications.

«Artificial intelligence will not only penetrate the virtual world, but also the physical world. The technology will change everything in industry, production and automation» stated Schmidhuber.

One of the main impacts of Artificial Intelligence involves the economy, particularly in Europe, where it focuses on manufacturing, which accounts for the 26% of European value added (GDP). However, the global industry is still in the early stage of adopting these new tools and most of the European companies are concerned about the cost of implementing the technology and choosing the right people to deploy it efficiently.

Some manufacturing process can be very complicated and require optimal chemical and physical conditions, as well as expertise acquired over time. AI can help determine these conditions or replace the necessary knowledge, as the Professor said: «although humans have been working on this knowledge for 100 years, there are still many ways to predict, model and control the processes using AI to make them more efficient».
