Schmidhuber at ETHZ on self-aware and conscious AI

Jürgen Schmidhuber will give a talk on self-aware and conscious AI at the institute of neuroinformatics of ETH Zürich. Consciousness in AI is a hotly debated topic, especially after the recent developments in large and complex language models, which approximate to uncanny details the interaction with a real human (it is recent news that more than one million users signed up to test ChatGPT). Jürgen can claim to have ignited most of recent research in this area, with his seminal works that inspired Generative Adversarial Networks and his research on Artificial Curiosity.

Alippi's group gets awarded at NeurIPS 2022

The paper "Scalable Spatiotemporal Graph Neural Networks" by Cini, Marisca, Bianchi and Alippi has been awarded a best paper award at the "Temporal Graph Learning Workshop" held at NeurIPS 2022 in New Orleans (USA), this December.

Marco Zaffalon talks about AI and Health at the Virtual Roadshow

Marco participated to the event centred on Health Care and Medical Technologies where Artificial intelligence (AI) is the key technology of the future.

Classifying taste using explainable AI

IDSIA’s researchers Gabriele Maroni, Dario Piga and Gianvito Grasso have contributed to a research study focused on the development of a virtual machine able to accurately predict sweeteners/bitterants compounds starting from their chemical composition. The study is entitled “Informed Classification of Sweeteners/Bitterants Compounds via Explainable Machine Learning” and has been published on the journal “Current Research in Food Science” (IF: 6.269). The work represents a crucial starting point in the definition of a virtual tongue able to predict the taste of specific ingredients with the ultimate goal of shedding light on the mechanisms at the basis of the taste perception process. The research has been conducted in collaboration with the Politecnico di Torino and the Italian company 7HC srl, and lies within the framework of the EU H2020 VIRTUOUS project, funded by the European Union under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions Program.

IDSIA's paper listed as "most impactful paper" by NCCR Robotics

The National Center of Competence in Research (NCCR) Robotics is closing its activities after 12 years of research and innovation, that fostered collaboration across many Swiss labs, including IDSIA USI-SUPSI. During the closing ceremony, the paper titled "A Machine Learning Approach to the Visual Perception of Forest Trails for Mobile Robots”, authored in 2015 in collaboration between IDSIA and at the University of Zurich, has been awarded as the most impactful over the whole duration of the NCCR initiative. We congratulate the IDSIA team who contributed to it: Alessandro Giusti, Jérôme Guzzi, Dan Ciresan (currently CEO of Conndera Research), Gianni Di Caro (currently with CMU in Qatar), Juergen Schmidhuber, and Luca Gambardella, as well as two coauthors that at the time were assistants at IDSIA during their studies at SUPSI: Fang-Lin He (now at Meta) and Juan Pablo Rodriguez Gomez (now at University of Seville).

Filippo Pura receives the Nizzola Foundation award

Filippo Pura, scientific collaborator of IDSIA, has been awarded the prize “Fondazione Nizzola” for his thesis on "Hybrid physical-based and data-driven modelling for automated calibration of laser cutting parameters" in the Master of Science in Engineering at SUPSI. Filippo’s work focused on developement and implementation of Artificial Intelligence algorithms for automated parameter tuning in manufacturing machines. The thesis of Filippo was carried out under the Innosuisse project ARTISTIC, in collaboration with the company Bystronic AG.

IDSIA's researchers at WeTechTogether

Usually IDSIA's researchers attend scientific conferences presenting their results, but this was a special occasion. The fourth edition of the WeTechTogether conference brought together several female tech communities such as Girls in tech CH, SwissTecLadies, Woman in AI, to empower, engage and celebrate women in tech and two female researchers from IDSIA, Sandra Mitrović and Maria Camila Alvarez Triviño, participated to this event.

IDSIA at NIPS 2022

IDSIA researchers will present their work at the prestigious NIPS conference (Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems) which will be held next November in New Orleans. NIPS is extremely selective and it is a great success for IDSIA to have four papers approved, by the research groups of Prof Alippi and Prof Schmidhuber.

Extracting gene-melanoma relations from scientific literature

Fabio Rinaldi, senior researcher at IDSIA, is also Group Leader at the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB). Fabio and his group have recently published their work on how dataset annotations can be useful to extract complexity information from datasets, in this case on the important relationship between genes and melanoma types. SIB has created a video highlighting this work, a link is available below, together with a link to the journal paper.

There is a huge hype about it; this notwithstanding, entrepreneurs may feel that the “AI revolution” has not impacted their business yet. With the goal of enhancing their scientific collaborations on the ethics of AI systems, the College of Humanities at EPFL, the Digital Society Initiative at the University of Zurich, and the Swiss AI Lab IDSIA USI-SUPSI are organising in Lausanne on September 7-9 2022 an international meeting aimed at bringing together philosophers, computer scientists, engineers and medical professionals to discuss and outline possible answers to the aforementioned crucial questions.

On Friday 3 June, Leopoldo Cerè, a graduate of the Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) programme, received the prize for the best Master's thesis from the Swiss Society for Operations Research (SVOR/ASRO) for his thesis work "Elastic Optimal Network Design with Machine Learning and Combinatorial Optimisation".

Antonio Paolillo contributes to a Science Robotics article

Antonio Paolillo, a researcher at the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence USI-SUPSI, has contributed to a publication by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) and the University of Lausanne (UNIL) in the prestigious journal Science Robotics to investigate the impacts of robotics and artificial intelligence on the job market.

Artificial intelligence to predict the taste of food

The Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence USI-SUPSI is an academic partner of VIRTUOUS (Virtual tongue to predict the organoleptic profile of Mediterranean ingredients), a project launched in 2019 under the European Marie Curie program, for the prediction of the organoleptic properties of Mediterranean ingredients from their molecular composition.

Eppendorf invests in IOR/IDSIA spin-off BigOmics Analytics

BigOmics Analytics, a spin-off of the Institute of Oncology Research and Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence, announces raising additional funding from Eppendorf, a leading life science company that develops and sells instruments, consumables and services for liquid, sample and cell handling in laboratories worldwide. The additional funding brings the total amount raised so far to CHF 2.7M. It will be used to further develop BigOmics’ platforms, to expand its team and to grow its presence in the market.
