The 7th Swiss Text Analytics Conference at the East Campus
15 June 2022
Between June 8 and 10, SUPSI’s Department of Innovative Technologies (DTI) of SUPSI hosted the 7th SwissText Analytics Conference, an event that brings together academics and practitioners active in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP).

After two online editions, the SwissText Analytics Conference returned as an in-person event.

Organized in collaboration with the Swiss Association for Natural Language Processing (SwissNLP), Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW), and the Data Innovation Alliance, SwissText was attended by over 100 academics and practitioners.

«NLP is not only a hot research topic, but also a valuable tool used by many companies to develop innovative products and services,» says Daniele Puccinelli, Professor at the Institute for Information Systems and Networking (ISIN). «In Switzerland, we are fortunate to have many research groups in industry and academia working on cutting-edge applied research problems in this field».

«In recent years, the Canton of Ticino has also experienced significant growth in the area of NLP,» continues Dr. Fabio Rinaldi, Senior Research Scientist at the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence Studies (IDSIA USI-SUPSI) and member of the SwissNLP steering committee. «NLP applications will increasingly have a positive impact on our lives».

The participants at the three-day Lugano event had the opportunity to discuss the latest technical and scientific developments in the field and attend presentations by three international keynote speakers: Marco Passarotti, Full Professor in Glottology and Linguistics at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan, Enrique Alfonseca, Research Technical Leader at Google, and Raul Rodriguez-Esteban, Senior Principal Scientist at Roche Pharmaceuticals.

The program featured technical sessions, poster presentations, technology demonstrations, as well as numerous networking opportunities to foster interaction among the attendees, including the Battle of NLP Ideas.

«We are very proud to be the first institution to host SwissText south of the Alps. Swisstext was a great opportunity to showcase the many research activities carried out by DTI,» concluded Roberto Mastropietro, Professor at ISIN.
